SLOW WALK – OMA Space (2020)

Rituals that involve walking in a circle around a vertical object such as a tree, corridor, bonfire, totem, or pagoda have existed in different forms across generations and locations, from the ancient geoglyphs of Nazca to the labyrinth of today’s Chartres Cathedral.

Drawing inspiration from the slow walks of Zen Buddhist monks around pagodas, OMA Space invites visitors into a ritual walk that brings the participant into more intimate contact with their deepest, most interior self.

A double spiral path laid across a 100 square-meter circular site designed to process the walk barefoot and in slow motion
from the edge to the center and back.

SLOW WALK is engaging the senses, touch, hearing, illumination.

From rough to delicate. The first-step sections of the spiral path begin on rough mineral textures meant to awaken the senses, to stimulate the feet and full attention, focus, and equilibrium. As the walk progresses, the textures become increasingly softer and lighter.
The last sections end on vegetal textures giving a pleasant and delicate sensation.

The slow-paced walking movement is naturally is encouraged naturally through the lights that guide the way together with the synchronized sound.

This poly-sensorial experience is an inner-journeying toward a solitary exploratory moment:
the spiral returns us to ourselves to reach life’s essential state of awareness.

TREE OF LIGHT
Immersive Experience
by OMA Space
.

Addressing the matter of humankind’s disconnectedness from the harmonizing power of nature,
our artwork is often deeply inspired by nature-based spirituality — animist practices, primitive forms, rituals and symbolisms.

In this context, the goal of this particular work is to gear human attention towards the inside,
to offer people experience for recollection and reconnection with life’s essential state of awareness.

Using ancient techniques and new technologies,
we wish to reconnect humans to their inner selves through immersive, meditative experiences.

We have been particularly fascinated by the primordial form of ancient circling processions, of people moving with ritual awareness
around central vertical forms such as trees, pillars, columns, cloisters, bonfires, totems and towers.

Inspired by the circular slow walks of Zen Buddhist monks around pagodas, we intend to create a contemporary ritual walk
that brings the participants into more intimate contact with their deepest, most interior self.

TREE OF LIGHT has been shown for the first time in the exhibition
PLEASE TOUCH THE THREAD – PRIERE DE TOUCHER LE FIL – October 16th to 20th – 2019 at Le Mobilier National in Paris

The exhibition was presented by Le Mobilier National – Google Art & Culture with the support of French Ministry of Culture,
Jacquard by Google, and FIAC!

PLEASE TOUCH THE THREAD was a celebration of ancestral savoir-faire meeting state-of-the-art technological innovation,
concluding the first artist residency initiated by Jacquard by Google, in partnership with Le Mobilier National.

Three international artists – OMA Space, Chloé Bensahel and Amor Muñoz –
have shown three installations redefining sensory interactions through JacquardTM technology.

This exhibition showed that “Tree of Light” is truly a ground-breaking statement of the OMA Space’s capacities
to create and offer a true experience of authentic transcendence.

“Tree of Light” has received a unanimously positive response from those who experienced this meditative walk at its inaugural exposition.
Nearly a thousand people felt sincerely touched and moved in profound ways during this unique multi-sensory immersion.

Feedback at the exhibition revealed that those who experienced “Tree of Light” felt deep moments of strong transformation
as they walked this spiral path guided in a unique inner-journeying toward a solitary exploratory moment.

It provides the studio with a very confident “proof of concept” that validates the effectiveness of this visioning-experience itself.
It affirms the core spirit of the project, beyond just the constituent parts of its minimal aesthetic,
its crafted theatrical set up, and the synchronized light and sonic guidance that undergirds the entire experience.

This harmonious chemistry of traditional craft techniques and the latest technologies is now fully synchronized and mastered.
Inspired and gratified by the fulsome reaction to our premier installation at Mobilier National,
OMA Space is already working on the next iterations of “Tree of Light”.

Future designs will feature a plug-and-play installation, and the studio will propose adapted and enhanced versions of the successful Paris design,
both for indoor and outdoor settings, matching the capabilities of this experience to a wide variety of settings and spaces, including in wild,
natural contexts (forests, etc.) as well as versions tailored to specific modern architectural environments.

Google Jacquard

TREE OF LIGHT

MANDALA (2018-2020) – Installation

MANDALA (2018-2020) – 300 x 630 (cm) – 2000 squares of natural fabrics, silk, cotton, hemp, all hand dyed with natural elements.
fermented ebony seeds, acorn, ink

Manda : the truth. La : to change. MANDALA : the changing truth.
As a map of an ephemeral sacred space, the Mandala expresses the ever-changing moments of truth.
This transformation phenomenon is an illusion created in various circumstances by human observation and perception.
The moment we realize this, we open ourselves to a free and infinite enlightened expansion.

OMA Space Mandala shows the appearance and disappearance of all things through the light. Every moment is a fraction of the perpetual changing.
It goes as soon as it comes.
Stitched with 2000 colors squares crafted with natural fabrics and natural colors defining a circular central light,
Mandala is a screen with a projection of an external source of light that radiates the ambient light of the room
through the diversity of colors and the various thickness of the fabrics.

NUMEN, latin word : a divine power believed to inhabit a particular object.

NUMEN is a representation of the cycle of nature with the trinity of birth, life and death.
This cycle of impermanence applies to all living and all natural elements on Earth.
Textiles are one of them and strictly follow this cycling principe of circulation.

NUMEN is made of 5 elements hanging is space with a sound environment.

On the sides, two sets of vertical ropes. One white and golden expressing the descent of the energy on Earth.
One black and grey expressing the rise of the energy going up back to the cosmos.

In the center three coats in non human size and cosmic dimension, 3 meters high or wide.

The first one, alongside the white ropes, being our birth, our awakening and the golden years of youth.
The second and central one being our lifespan, our layers of life experience and our slow material decay.
The third one, alongside the black ropes, expressing the time of being old and our occurring death and transformation.

Numen was presented at the Saatchi Gallery during OPEN COLLECT LONDON in February 2018.

EARTH (2016) – Installation

Our first installation EARTH in November 2016 at the Gana Art Center in Seoul, is the matrix of our following works like NUMEN and FERMENTATION.

EARTH is a 11mx 2m line of soil on the floor.

From an extremity to the other, the cycle of textile’s birth, life and death is placed in an continuity of diverse elements.

Starting from seeds in the soil, cotton’s flowers, threads, raw fiber becoming woven fabric, up to the final garment decaying and returning to the soil in the fumes of burning incense.

This “ashes to ashes” process is part of our research about the cycle of the impermanence and the principle of eternal circulation.
